RESOURCES

As Pastor Burt continues to preach through the Gospel of Luke two theses have impressed him in chapter 6 and 7. The first of these themes is the necessity of learning to truly trust God. The second theme is a fruit of this trust. The heart that truly trusts God will grow in humility before God and people.

Some helpful books for understanding these themes are:

Trusting God --Even When Life Hurts, by Jerry Bridges.  In this book Bridges teaches us how understanding the greatness of God, His love and His wisdom is the beginning and end of a life of trust--and freedom from a life of anxiety, doubt and bitterness.

The Hand of God, by Frederick Leahy is a careful study of God's Sovereignty in what is generally called his providence.  The purpose of this book is to show the relevance of the Bible's teaching on the sovereignty of God to the lives of all men and women everywhere.  Not only does this great truth stretch and enlarge the human mind, it also brings much needed comfort to the 'broken and contrite' human heart.

Humility, True Greatness, by C.J. Mahaney.  God clearly states that He is drawn to the humble.  He's also clear that He opposes the proud.  These two, humility and pride, cannot coexist.  Where one is fostered, the other is defeated.  Which will you pursue?  C.J. Mahaney paints a striking picture of the daily battle quietly raging within every Christian and asks whether you will passively accommodate the enemy of your soul, pride, or actively cultivate your best friend, humility.  When you acknowledge the deception of pride and intentionally humble yourself, you become free to savor adundant mercies and unlikely graces.  You will find a new life is yours--alife God richly favors.   A God-glorifying life you don't want to miss.

These books are currently provided on the WellSpring Book Table.

FAQ

What is your Sunday service like?

The worship services at WellSpring Church are an intentional attempt to exalt God and to exult in God.  Our praise to God is meant to give us joy in God.  Our setting is informal and we use a combination of historical worship forms and contemporary music.

What will happen when I visit for the first time?

You will be greeted by our ushers, given information about our facility and accepted as a person who is important to us and to God.

What do I wear to attend your service?

We have an informal setting—casual clothes are appropriate.

What about my children?

A nurturing nursery is provided for infants and young toddlers. As an alternative to worshipping with parents during the whole service, we have age-appropriate classes for children through grade three. There is also a family room where you may sit with your children and listen to the service until they are comfortable in a class or in worship with the congregation.

How can I meet others and get connected?

Pastor Burt and the elders will be glad to help you get connected with others, especially through our community groups and church fellowship functions.

OUR WORSHIP

Our worship service is intended to glorify and honor God by focusing on His great worth, His soul-satisfying sufficiency and His grace and mercy as the author of our salvation.  We seek to center our attention on the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, as the answer to our greatest need—reconciliation with God.  We depend on the Holy Spirit as we sing, pray, give, confess, preach, and listen to the Word of God.  Worship is a full-personed (mind, body, and emotions) response to the truth of God received through the intellect and the affections.

Our use of contemporary music reflects our desire to use the musical language of our culture as we speak to God.  Our use of traditional liturgical forms reflects our understanding of our connection to the historic church through the centuries.

Redeemer Hill Church - Hartford Connecticut

Mandate

Redeemer Hill Church exists to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the city of Hartford.  We desire to be a city on a hill within Hartford, to seek the welfare of the city, to build relationships with the people of the city, and to work to transform Hartford. For God’s glory alone.

Motives

What motivates us at Redeemer Hill Church is the gospel of Jesus Christ.  This is central to everything we do, teach, or live at RHC.  Our values at RHC start with the gospel.

1. Community – The gospel is community.  God lives in perfect community within the Trinity.  Gospel Centered community is about brining imperfect people of all kinds together around the cross of Christ.

2. Truth – The gospel is truth and we must immerse ourselves in it.  It shines light into the dark places and refines us to become more like Jesus everyday.  Truth helps us seek justice for those who are shown none.

3. Grace – The gospel is grace.  Jesus has given us grace so that we might have salvation through faith in him.  Because grace has been poured out upon us we can only pour it out on others. Grace helps us to love mercy and to seek justice and to be humble before God.

4. Beauty – The gospel is beautiful.  God made this world beautiful and sin has destroyed much of it.  We want lives to be transformed and communities (Hartford) to be restored so that people can get a foretaste of the beauty to come in the new Heavens and Earth

BAPTISM

We teach Christian baptism by immersion (Acts 8:36-39) is the solemn and beautiful testimony of a believer showing forth his faith in the crucified buried, and risen Savior, and his union with Him in death to sin and resurrection to a new life (Romans 6:1-11). It is also a sign of fellowship and identification with the visible Body of Christ (Acts 2:41-42).  Baptism is required for membership in WellSpring Church and will be scheduled according to need.  Those who have not been baptized as a believer and wishing to participate in this testimony of discipleship should contact one the elders.

JESUS

As a Christian Church we affirm that God's Son, Jesus Christ is the only means of a restored relationship with our creator.  The Bible tells us and the Church that history has affirmed that Jesus is fully God, existing from eternity, not created, and shown to us in a fully human form.  This God-man, Jesus, lived a perfect life so that by his death on the cross he might present himself to God as the substitution for the penalty that our sins have brought to us.  Christianity is the life that results from receiving the gift of Jesus on our behalf and living for Him by His power.

OUR VISION

WellSpring Church is a diverse worshipping community in downtown Springfield pursuing intentional spiritual growth, equipping the next generation to know Christ and engaging our culture with a Biblical worldview for the glory of God.

Bringing the heart of God to the heart of the city.

Bringing the face of the city to the face of God.

OUR BELIEFS

1. Scripture: We teach that the sixty-six books of the Bible are God’s message of truth to us, without error in any of its parts.  It teaches us what we are to believe concerning God and those things that bring us into a proper relationship with Him. It is authoritative and is to be received and obeyed in its entirety.  It is the only standard by which we might know how to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

2. God: We teach that God exists, and that the God of the Scriptures is the one living and true God who is an infinite, all-knowing Spirit, perfect in all of His attributes, eternal, and unchanging.  It is this God who has created the Universe and all that is in it by the Word of His power, according to His own purposes and for His glory and praise.  There are three distinct persons in the Godhead, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each equal in essence, power, and purpose and each equally deserving of worship.

a. The Father is the creator and sustainer of all things by His power for His glory and its good.

b. The Son, Jesus Christ, is eternally co-equal with the Father and is also called the author of salvation.  He was sent to earth by the Father to live in a human body without losing any of His divine attributes.  Jesus was born to a virgin mother, lived a perfectly sinless life, was put to death on the cross, buried, and rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scripture.  He returned to heaven where He actively works with the Father on behalf of His people.  It is only by receiving the work of Jesus on our behalf that we may have a restored relationship with God.  He alone is the way to God.

c. We teach that the third person of the Godhead is the Holy Spirit who is coequal with the Father and the Son in personality, power, intellect and purpose.  The primary work of the Holy Spirit is to be the presence of God in the life of God’s people and to show the glories of the Son to the world.  The Holy Spirit gifts and empowers God’s people for their work in the world.

3. Man: We teach that Manmale and femalewas directly and immediately created by God in His own image and likeness. Man was created free of sin with a rational nature, intelligence, volition, self-determination, and moral responsibility to God.  The first couple acted in rebellion against God and by their sin all human beings have inherited a sin nature, which makes us incapable of choosing or doing that which is acceptable to God apart from His grace. Without Divine intervention, man is hopelessly lost.

4. Salvation: We teach that salvation is wholly of God by grace on the basis of the redemption of Jesus Christ, through his moral perfection and the merit of His death on behalf of sinners.  In no way is salvation the result of human merit or workor even human cooperation with God.  It is the gift of God to sinners.  Upon our repentance and belief in the death of Christ on our behalf for the forgiveness of sin, God declares the sinner free from the guilt of sin, removes its pollution, and breaks its power over our lives.  By this gift of new life, God restores the relationship with Himself that was broken by sin.  This new life gives us the ability to live for God, and will be shown by changed behavior, mindset, and priorities. Those with this new life are called Christians.

5. The Church: We teach that all who place their faith in Jesus Christ are immediately placed by the Holy Spirit into one united spiritual Body, the Church.  The Church is made up of all Christians who have lived in all places and all times.  Jesus Christ is the supreme authority and head of the Church and has delegated the responsibility of leadership and governance to the elders and pastors of each local church.

6. Marriage: We teach that marriage is a lifelong union between one man and one woman that is intended to reflect the faithfulness of God to His people, the purity and holiness of His character, and the loyalty of the Church to Christ.  Marriage is a gift of God for the good of people, for the strengthening of culture, and the continuation of the human race.

7. Last things: We teach that at the end of the present age, Christ will return to earth to gather the Church to Himself, to judge the unrepentant, to grant rewards to the faithful, to reconcile all things to himself, and rule over all his creation forever.  In addition we teach the bodily resurrection of all men: the believer to eternal bliss with the Savior, the unrepentant to judgment and eternal punishment.

GIVE

God is a God who gives.  It is He who has given us all that we have.  We give to him out of the resources he has provided as a declaration of faith and trust.  We believe and trust God to take care of us, his people.  Our giving is meant to show that trust.  Our desire in giving is that the resources we return to Him will be used for the ongoing proclamation of His goodness to people locally and globally.

MINISTRIES

Ministering to others together is an awesome experience!  It fulfills your desire for team fellowship as well as pouring into others.  By building relationships and together, we believe that we can reach our communities and our world for Christ.  We have several areas to join and become a part of, so you can build relationships while making a difference in the lives of others.  Become a part of something big!

NEXT STEPS

The Christian life can be likened to a journey.  Our goal is to move from where we are in our relationship to God to the next step until we find ourselves in conformity with Jesus Christ.  This process, which is called discipleship, takes us from being curious or inquiring, to being connected to fully participating in the life that God has designed for us.  To remain where we are in our journey is to be static and unfulfilled.  God has great things for all of his people.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CHRISTIAN

Being a Christian is more than identifying yourself with a particular religion or affirming a set of beliefs or a certain value system. Being a Christian means that you have been radically changed from the inside out by God’s power, love, mercy and grace. This change begins when your spiritual eyes are opened so that you begin to accept and embrace what the Bible says about God, you, the problem between you and God, and God’s solution to that problem through Jesus Christ.

Who God is  The Bible throughout declares that God exists and that He is the creator of all that there is.  The God of the Bible is no mere force, idea or principle.  The God of the Bible is personal, all-powerful and communicates with His creation in order that He might be known. God wants to be known! The Bible makes this stunning promise in Hebrews 11:6 “…whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”  He has communicated Himself to us through creation, the Bible and His Son Jesus Christ.

Who we are  Human beings are creations of God with dignity, worth and purpose.  Our primary purpose for our existence is to glorify God by enjoying a personal relationship with Him and reflecting His perfection back to Him and to the rest of creation.  These perfections include His love, mercy, kindness, holiness, and justice.  We each one have fallen far short of this purpose in our lives.  Our short-fall is due to our inherent inclination to serve our own interests first, to love our own ways and to rebel against any outside authority—particularly God.  We are genetically predisposed to this rebellion that the Bible calls sin and we find ourselves incapable of obeying and pleasing God.  The Bible’s sad diagnosis of our situation is that we are in a broken relationship with God and are incapable in ourselves of rightly understanding, loving or pleasing God on our own. (See Romans 3:10-12; 23.)  Even our best efforts to live good, moral and kind lives fail to reach the standard of God’s perfection.

The problem between God and us  The holiness and justice of God demand that a penalty be paid for our rebellion, our failure to acknowledge God as the rightful ruler of our lives and our actions and attitudes that have broken His good and holy laws.  This penalty is a continued spiritual death and eternal separation from God—never achieving the joy, happiness and peace with God that we have been created to enjoy.  Our sins are infinitely horrible because they are committed against an infinitely holy God.

The Solution that God has provided for our problem   The message of the Bible is called the Gospel—Good News!  God is not content that we should remain in our terrible plight of rebellion and condemnation.  The Good News is that God, out of His infinite love for His own Glory and for the good of His creation, became a human man in order that He might become His own solution to our problem.  We are told in John 3:16 that God loved His world so much that He sent His only Son, whom we know as Jesus Christ, into this world to live as our example and substitute so that we might be brought back into a relationship of forgiveness and peace with God.  Jesus’ life on earth was one of perfect morality and conformity with the laws and character of God.  Yet he died, he was killed, and by his death took the penalty that was not His, but ours.  His example shows us what the perfection we cannot achieve looks like.  His substitution is two-fold.  He takes our place and our sin-penalty in his death, even though he was completely innocent of sin.  He is our substitute by offering us His perfection, so that we may be restored to a relationship of forgiveness, acceptance, and peace with God. God offers us the result of Jesus’ death as a free gift!  This is why it is called Good News.

How can I make this Good News MY Good News?  Let’s go back to John 3:16 to begin to answer this question.  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”  Making God’s gift my own happens when I believe what the Bible tells me about God, myself, my problem and the Good News of God’s solution.  This believing says, “God is holy and just. I am a rebel who deserves the just penalty for my sin. I cannot pay this penalty by my own efforts. My only hope is Jesus.”  Romans 10:9-13 tells us this:

... if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

One last word  True faith is always accompanied by a conscious turning from sin. It isn’t enough to believe certain facts about Christ; a life-change must also be evident. Welcome to WellSpring Church! Here you will find a church whose purpose is to help you accomplish your greatest purpose in living, that is, to bring honor and glory to God.  As you investigate our website or join us in worship we want to introduce you to a diverse community of passionate God-seekers who desire to be changed by a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, God-Centered worship and by pursuing a life-style that is founded on the never-changing and always true Word of God.  You are invited to come as you are, but our hope is that you will not stay as you are!  We may look informal and our music may be contemporary, but our approach to God is based on a serious application of the truth of historic Christianity to everyday living.

My prayer is always that God will use WellSpring to help people move from the plastic, unfulfilling, lonely and frustrating life that we find in this world to a life with Him as it is meant to be lived—fully, confidently and meaningfully. And all of this for the glory of God! Please join us soon for a worship service and let us welcome you into our community.

Hope to see you soon!
